Abstract

Abstract: Magnetic and fluorescence properties of chemically synthesized Yb0.45 Gd2.55 Sc2 Al3− x Fe x O12 (Yb:GSAIG) nanocrystals have been investigated as a function of Fe 3+ composition x . Structural characterization of the samples by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) has shown that they are in a garnet phase when 0 ≤ x ≤ 2.5. According to XRD Rietveld analyses, Sc 3+ selectively occupy the octahedral (16 a ) sites, while Al 3+ and Fe 3+ go to the tetrahedral (24 d ) sites in the garnet. The Fe 3+ occupancy at the 24 d sites increases with increasing x . The intensity of Yb 3+ fluorescence observed at emission wavelength ∼1030 nm decreases with increasing x from 0 to 2.5. The absorbance due to Fe 3+ at the 24 d sites increases with increasing x, indicating that the fluorescence sensitively varies with x . All the samples exhibit a paramagnetic behavior at low temperatures 5–300 K. Their magnetization at 5 K decreases with increasing x under magnetic fields up to ±40 kOe.
