- Highlights: Effect of milling temperatures on the long-term oxidation at 800 °C was investigated. Cryo-milling enabled homogeneous, fine grain and high number density of oxides. Four mechanisms influenced excellent oxidation resistance in cryomilled ODS steel. Abstract: This study investigated the effect of milling temperature on long-term high-temperature (800 °C) oxidation property of Fe-14Cr-3W-0.4Ti-0.3Y2 O3 (wt.%) oxide dispersion-strengthened steel (milling temperatures were set to 25 °C (K1) and −150 °C (K4)). Atom-probe tomography results showed several nm-scale naturally formed surface oxide films containing yttrium before oxidation. Weight gains after 6000 h oxidation tests for C (cast alloy without Y2 O3 ), K1 and K4 were measured to be 2.45, 1.46 and 0.30 mg/cm 2, respectively. The exceptional oxidation resistance of K4 was found to come from the complicated interactions among reactive element (RE), grain size, nano-oxide particle and naturally formed oxide-film.
