- Abstract: Tb-doped ZnS (ZnS:Tb 3+ ) QDs with various Tb concentration have been successfully fabricated by the wet chemical method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy have revealed that the synthesized QDs had a zinc blende structure and the particle diameter was about 5 nm. The optical properties were studied through photoluminescence (PL) spectra and time decay curves. XRD, emission spectra and PL decay kinetics have confirmed the successful incorporation of Tb 3+ ions into ZnS host. The PL spectra also revealed that the intensity of dopant emission was significantly enhanced due to the energy transfer from the emission of host material. The interaction mechanism and the energy transfer between Tb 3+ ions were studied by Inokuti-Hirayama model. The efficiency of the energy transfer process from ZnS host to Tb 3+ ions and the nature of this interaction mechanism were determined. For the first time, the quantum cutting process based on energy transfer between Tb 3+ ions has also been studied for ZnS:Tb 3+ QDs. Highlights: The QC process basing on ET between Tb 3+ ions has been studied for ZnS:Tb 3+ QDs. Quantum cutting luminescence in ZnS:Tb 3+ QDs occurs under excitation at 212 nm. Luminescence from 5 D4 level is enhanced with the increase of Tb 3+ concentration. Energy transfer between Tb 3+ ions is studied through Inokuti-Hirayama model.
