- Abstract: In this paper, we report that undoped CaSO4 shows radio-photoluminescence (RPL) properties. The RPL is a rare phenomenon in which a luminescence centre is generated by ionizing radiation. This material, as prepared, does not show photoluminescence (PL) whereas a strong PL appears in irradiated material with a broad emission band peaking around 690 nm under 590 nm of excitation. The sensitivity of RPL to x-ray dose is about 10 times higher than that of commercial RPL detector used for personnel dosimetric applications. No signs of signal fading or build-up are observed even after 20 readouts, which enables the application of RPL from CaSO4 to real-time sensing.
