Abstract

ABSTRACT: The in vitro antioxidant properties, brine shrimp lethality bioassay, in vivo analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diarrheal potentiality of methanolic and ethyl acetate extracts of leaf of Marsdenia tenacissima were examined. The solvent extracts tested positive for the presence of bioactive constituents alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, and saponins. Methanol extract had higher total phenolic, total flavonoid content as well as total antioxidant activity and also demonstrated more potent DPPH, NO, H2 O2, and OH scavenging activity, cupric reducing and reducing power assessment than ethyl acetate extract. In brine shrimp lethality bioassay, the methanol extract demonstrated a better effect. The methanolic extract also demonstrated better analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diarrheal activities than the ethyl acetate extract. HPLC analysis confirmed the presence of phenolic and flavonoid compounds including benzoic acid, gallic acid, pyrogallol, salicylic acid, trans -cinnamic acid, and vanillic acid in the leaf extract of M. tenacissima .
