- Abstract : Introduction: Gut microbiota has been shown to play an increasingly important role in health with recent data suggesting that probiotics exert ACE-inhibitory activity. As a result, several clinical trials were conducted to assess the effect of probiotics, such as lactobacillus on blood pressure. However, many of these trials provided inconclusive results. Objective: To conduct meta-analysis of clinical trials that assess the effect of Lactobacillus probiotic supplementation in lowering systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Methods: A comprehensive literature search using PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, EBSCOhost, ProQuest, and JSTOR online for randomized controlled studies comparing the effect of Lactobacillus probiotic versus placebo in lowering blood pressure was performed up to December 2019. The measured outcomes were mean changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Meta-statistics were done using the random-effects model. Result: Fourteen randomized clinical trials involving a total of 955 patients met the inclusion criteria. Supplementation of Lactobacillus probiotic produced a statistically significant difference in systolic blood pressure by −2.05 mmHg (95% CI −3.48 to −0.63) and diastolic blood pressure by −2.00 mmHg (95% CI −3.36 to −0.64) when compared with the placebo group. Conclusion: Supplementation with Lactobacillus probiotics may lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure by a slight degree. More high-quality studies are needed toAbstract : Introduction: Gut microbiota has been shown to play an increasingly important role in health with recent data suggesting that probiotics exert ACE-inhibitory activity.
