Abstract

ABSTRACT: This reflective paper, which introduces this special edition on a century of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Stellenbosch University, begins by touching on two main features of the department since its inception, namely the fact that the department was founded mainly as a strong human geography department and the issue of Afrikaans as academic language. Then, brief descriptions are given of how the department is slowly ridding itself of its apartheid baggage; how internationalization has transformed the department; the #FeesMustFall movement and the move towards decolonization.
