- ABSTRACT: The physiochemical properties of xanthan gum have been altered chemically, promoting its use for biological applications. This article reports fabrication of chemically modified xanthan gum and hydroxyapatite based microspheres by water in oil emulsion cross linking method. The prepared microspheres with smooth and porous surface were evidenced by scanning electron microscope. FTIR spectroscopy and XRD analyses validated interaction of xanthan gum - hydroxyapatite in the fabricated microspheres. The microspheres exhibited optimized swelling ratio during prolonged exposure to SBF. Additionally SEM analysis of the SBF immersed microspheres showed uneven surface morphology with moderate degradation. In vitro evaluation by MTT assay confirmed the nonimmunogenic characteristics of XG-HA microsphere in lymphocyte culture. The fabricated microspheres were asserted to be used as a drug carrier for bone regeneration.
