- Abstract : ( BMJ . 2019;365:l1656) While low Apgar scores (<7) have been associated with increased risk of poor neonatal outcomes including mortality and morbidity, there have not been any investigations into whether the risks of these outcomes vary between normal Apgar scores of 7, 8, and 9 compared with a score of 10. This information could be useful in predicting the risk of conditions such as neonatal infection, respiratory distress, and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, which have been associated with worse neurodevelopmental status later in childhood compared with children without these conditions. This population-based Swedish study examined the risks of neonatal mortality and morbidity associated with Apgar scores of 7, 8, and 9 (vs. 10) at 1, 5, and 10 minutes.
