Abstract

Abstract : Cover: Ruditapes philippinarum (The Manila clam) from Goro Lagoon (Italy), displaying color variation of the shells. Although it was not the first species in which Doubly Uniparental Inheritance (DUI) has been discovered, R. philippinarum soon became one of the most studied DUI model organisms, and along with the other DUI bivalves, has contributed to increase the knowledge of this unusual system of mitochondrial inheritance. DUI can shed light on mitochondrial inheritance and biogenesis and, above all, on the relationship between mitochondria and germ line. Moreover, DUI is a unique experimental system for studying mitochondrial heteroplasmy, and two processes that shape genome evolution: genomic conflicts and mito‐nuclear coevolution, which are at the very root of eukaryotic life.
