Abstract

Abstract : States' obligation to protect, fulfil and respect human rights includes creating mechanisms for the promotion and protection of those rights. The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), as a national human rights institution (NHRI), is one such mechanism. However, an analysis of MHRC's work alongside international human rights principles and best practices point to an institution that has numerous challenges and in need of reforms. Its composition and working methods present contemporary challenges to its effectiveness. Therefore, drawing lessons from international principles and best practices, the article makes recommendations for improvement.
