Abstract

Abstract: This paper deals with the study of moisture absorption behaviour of hybrid composite consist of jute and kevlar as reinforcement, fumed silica as nanofiller, and Epoxy Ly-556 as a matrix. Alkali treatment of jute fabrics is done to improve its hydrophobicity. Twenty composite samples are prepared by varying the layering sequence of fabrics (JJJJ, JKKJ, KJJK, JKJK, and KKKK) and nanofiller content (0%, 1.5%, 3%, and 4.5%). Hand lay-up method is used to fabricate the composite. The Moisture absorption study is done under distilled water environment. It is found that the water absorption rate can be reduced by controlling the surface exposer of jute to the moist environment. The moisture absorption can also be reduced by increasing the filler content. Composite JJJJ-0 shows maximum saturated moisture absorption percentage, i.e. 4.18% and it is found decreasing with increase in filler content. Minimum saturated moisture absorption is for KKKK-1.5, i.e. 2.32%.
