- Abstract: This paper provides an analysis of microstructure and mechanical properties of Al6101 metal matrix composite reinforced with silicon carbide particles. In this study, the Al6101-SiC metal matrix composite samples prepared using two-step stir casting are used to assess mechanical properties by conducting tests on a Universal Testing Machine and Vicker's hardness tester. Mechanical properties like yield strength, shear strength and, hardness number show an increasing trend with an increase in the weight percentage of silicon carbide. However decrease in yield strength and shear strength is observed in samples containing 15% silicon carbide by weight. The ductility of the developed metal matrix composite found to be decreased with an increase in weight % of silicon carbide. The microstructure tests of the developed composite conducted using scanning electron microscopy indicate almost homogeneous distribution of reinforcement particles. Particle accumulation, shrinkage cavities are also found at some regions. Energy dispersive spectroscopy tests indicate element percentage in composite samples. The phases formed are identified by X-ray diffraction tests.
