Abstract

Highlights: Holistic river restoration requires collaborative, whole-of-systems approaches. Loss of cultural connection to rivers is acutely felt by Indigenous peoples. River restoration in Aotearoa New Zealand must consider different ways of knowing. Collaboration is needed to incorporate social and cultural values and interests. Māori involvement in river restoration is strengthened by legislative changes. Enacting ontological pluralism in restoration requires progressive and transformative changes.
