Further perspectives of catalyst development and reactor design. Abstract: In this review, we introduced the necessity of biomass tar reforming and the deactivation mechanisms of catalysts. It is necessary to develop a catalyst which has a high resistance towards coke, sintering and poison. For this purpose, the progress of catalyst design in biomass tar reforming reactions are summarized. The reactor design and the simulation techniques are also introduced. There are still challenges in the tar reforming and biomass gasification reactions in terms of catalyst and reactor design as well as process control. Expectations are proposed, including the development of a multi-functional catalyst for the real biomass gasification and reforming reactions with high resistance towards coke, sintering and poisons; elucidating the formation and catalytic mechanisms; integration of reactor design and catalyst development to lay the foundation of mass production in industry.
