- Abstract: The polysulfide shuttling and serious volumetric change of sulfur during cycling are crucial obstacles to develop long-life Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. In this study, a novel sulfur host of SnO2 -decorated MoS2 microboxes (MoS2 @SnO2 ) was prepared by a simple template-assisted strategy and subsequent hydrothermal treatment. The results show that the synthesized MoS2 @SnO2 composite exhibits a stable hollow porous structure, enlarged pore volume, increased surface area, and high binding energy by S–Sn–O chemical bonds, which remarkably improve physical and chemical dual-confined capability for polysulfides. Combined with exceptional structural stability and favorable electrolyte wettability, the MoS2 @SnO2 /S cathode demonstrates initial discharge capacity (1281 mAh g −1 at 0.2C) and superior long-cycling stability (701 mAh g −1 at 1C after 1000 cycles with an ultraslow capacity decay of ≈0.033% per cycle), which are much better than those of MoS2 microboxes/S and MoS2 microparticles/S cathodes. This work may provide a significant strategy for designing a multifaceted cathode by rationally integrating the relationships of structure, composition and property for long-life Li–S batteries.
