- Graphical abstract: The tripodal ligand L forms a trinuclear assembly [L2 Cu3 ] 6+ in which large and unsymmetrical anions are encapsulated, with the X-ray structures of [L2 Cu3 (SeO4 )] 4+ and [L2 Cu3 (S2 O3 )] 4+ reported. In the presence of the trigonal pyramidal SeO3 2− anion, both a trinuclear [L2 Cu3 (SeO3 )] 4+ and an octametallic assembly [L4 Cu8 (SeO3 )4 ] 8+ are formed and are analysed by X-ray crystallography. The formation of the octanuclear species is a consequence of maximising both the –NH⋯SeO3 2− interactions and the Cu 2+ coordination bonds.
