- Highlights: The corrosion failure of the high-pressure air cooler system is investigated. The failure is caused by insufficiency mixing between the NH4 Cl and water. Deposition process of ammonium chloride is controlled by circulation flow. Abstract: The corrosion failure of the high-pressure air cooler system was investigated, which was revealed to be induced by the under-deposited corrosion of ammonium chloride. The results show that the initial crystallization temperature of the ammonium chloride is 170 °C which is located at the outlet of the heat exchanger E104 and the amount of the wash water is enough to dissolve the ammonium chloride. However, because no atomizing nozzle is used, the wash water cannot efficiently mix with the ammonium chloride which has led to the failure of the air cooler. For the deposition process of ammonium chloride in the air cooler, it is mainly controlled by the two-circulation flow beside the inlet pipe which has led to a different particle and velocity distributions among the air cooler tubes.
