- Graphical abstract: Highlights: Statistical optimization of catalyst composition is discussed. Taguchi method with optimization of multiple quality characteristics theory is implemented in catalyst synthesis. The catalyst with optimized chemical composition shows a good activity and stability in DRM reaction. Mg is a better promotor than the Ce and La for DRM catalyst. Reducible supports (TiO2 and ZrO2 ) perform inferiorly in DRM reaction. Abstract: The design and optimization of nanocrystalline mesoporous Ni-based catalyst for methane reforming with CO2 were studied using a statistically designed experiment. The Taguchi method based advanced combinatorial experimental design was applied in the development of catalysts by simultaneously varying the seven number of design parameters. The detailed interpretation and the multi-response optimization of the catalyst in terms of deactivation factor, initial activity (%) and catalyst productivity for superior catalytic performance was accomplished by the multi-response signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio analysis combined with the weighting factor. The catalysts were thoroughly characterized by using the BET- BJH, WPXRD, H2 -TPR, CHN analysis, DTA-TGA, ICP-MS SEM, TEM, and XPS analysis. The results show a significant improvement in the quality of reforming catalysts. The type of support (titania-alumina mixed oxide) is the major driving force for the sustainable activity of the dry reforming catalyst. The type of support (titania-alumina mixed oxide) is the major driving force for the sustainable activity of the dry reforming catalyst. Pt amongst the noble metals and Mg from the group of promoters (La, Ce, etc.) were found to be the most influential metals in designing a robust Ni-based catalyst system for the DRM reaction. The optimized catalyst demonstrates excellent stability in time on stream study of 100 h. The different characterization techniques confirm that the optimized catalysts were free from coke deposition and any severe metal sintering. The apparent activation energies of few catalysts were also presented. … (more)
