- Highlights: Fungi contain almost all the genes/enzymes associated with biosynthesis of flavonoids. The major genes associated with flavonoid biosynthesis are phenylalainine ammonia lyase, chalcone synthase, chalcone isomerase, flavonol reductase etc. are found in the genome of the fungi. However, the presence of genes associated with flavonoid biosynthesis pathway is not universal in fungi. Abstract: Mushroom is a fruiting body of fungi and hence it contains all the genomic architecture of its genome. The genomic architecture of the fruiting body is not separated from its mycelia. A manuscript by Alicia Gil-Ramirez entitled "Mushroom don't contain flavonoids" published by "Journal of Functional Foods" vol. 25, August 2016, page 1–13 (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jff.2016.05.005 ) has exclusively mentioned in the abstract section that "no sequences encoding chalcone synthase or chalcone isomerase (key enzyme involved in the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway) were found in the genomic databases even in completely sequenced mushrooms indicating that they do not have the enzyme needed for their production".
