Abstract

Abstract: India has a rich source of plants, many of which are used in traditional medicine such as Ayurveda. Several species of Justicia are widely used in folk medicines for the treatment of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases as well as inflammation. It is also used in treatment of poison bites and has anti cancer activity. The present study was aimed at carrying out the molecular characterization of Justicia plumbaginifolia using rbcL gene. The bioactive components in the leaves were extracted by two methods, fresh aqueous extract and alcoholic extract obtained by ultrasonication. The two extracts were analysed for their anticancer activity by MTT assay method against MDA-MB cells and anti hemolytic activity against Pseudomonas sp. Alcoholic sonicated extracts showed 48.89% of viable cells when compared to aqueous sonicated extracts (54.11% viable cells). Hence it was observed that alcoholic extracts have more anticancer activity when compared with aqueous ultrasonic extract. Fresh aqueous extract showed significant anti hemolytic activity.
