- Abstract: Fine roots play an important role in plant nutrition, as well as in carbon, water, and nutrient cycling. Fine roots account for a third of terrestrial net primary production (NPP), and inclusion of their structure and function in global carbon models should improve predictions of ecosystem responses to climate change. However, studies focusing on underground plant components are much less frequent than those on aboveground structure. This is more marked in the tropics, where one‐third of the planet's terrestrial NPP is produced. Some tropical forests have been more represented in the literature than others, as demonstrated in the collective studies in Puerto Rico. This Caribbean island's biodiversity, frequency of natural disturbances, ease of access to forests, and long‐term plots have created an ideal place for the study of tropical ecological processes. This literature review emphasizes 50 years of root research and patterns revealed around Puerto Rico. The data in this review were compiled from scientific publications, conference reports, symposiums, and raw data shared by some researches. Emergent patterns include the shallow distribution of fine roots, the great variation in root biomass among different forest types, little variation in root phosphorus concentrations, the slow recovery of root biomass after Hurricane Hugo, and the fact that most data on roots come from the wet tropical Luquillo Experimental Forest, causing other habitat types to beAbstract: Fine roots play an important role in plant nutrition, as well as in carbon, water, and nutrient cycling. Resumen: Las raíces finas son un importante componente vegetal, tanto para la nutrición de la planta, como para el ciclo de carbono, nutrientes, y agua. Estas raíces representan un tercio de la producción primaria neta (PPN) terrestre y su compleja inclusión en los modelos globales de carbono es esencial para mejores predicciones de cambio climático. Sin embargo, los estudios referentes al componente subterráneo son mucho menores que los referentes aéreos. Este patrón es más marcado en los trópicos, donde se produce un tercio de la PPN terrestre. Existen áreas en los trópicos que han sido más representadas que otras; este es el caso de Puerto Rico. Su diversidad biológica, frecuencia de disturbios naturales, fácil acceso a los bosques, y parcelas permanentes de monitoreo han creado un espacio ideal para el estudio de procesos ecológicos tropicales. La presente revisión bibliográfica hace hincapié en la historia y los patrones de raíces finas alrededor de la isla desde hace más de 50 años. Esta recopilación de estudios contiene datos crudos compartidos por algunos autores, publicaciones científicas, reportes de conferencias, y simposios. Los patrones más sobresalientes son la distribución superficial de raíces finas a lo largo de la isla, la gran variación de biomasa a lo largo de los diferentes tipos de bosque, la poca variación en la concentración de fósforo en las raíces, la lenta recuperación de la biomasa de raíces después del huracán Hugo, y la representación desigual del territorio donde el bosque húmedo del Bosque Experimental de Luquillo es el más representado.
