Abstract

Abstract : This review has been mainly focussed on distribution, cytology, genetic diversity and molecular phylogeny of selected species of Zingiberaceae belonging to four genera of high economic importance viz ., Alpinia, Amomum, Curcuma and Hedychium . Zingiberaceae comprising ca .50 genera and more than 1600 species is mostly distributed in tropical and subtropical areas. Cytological and genetic diversity analyses so far carried out obviously, indicated the genetic relatedness or variation of the species both at intergeneric and intrageneric levels. The DNA barcode and molecular phylogeny also point towards the degree of phylogenetic relationships between the species and also supplement the details of preferred barcode candidates for precise identification of Zingiberean species.
