Abstract

Bacteria living symbiotically within marine invertebrates often confer the ability to generate bioactive natural products to fight off potential predators or to compete for living space. A microbial symbiont, Batillaria zonalis associated Streptomyces sampsonii SCSIO 054, was found displaying antibacterial activity against Gram‐positive bacteria. Bioassay‐guided isolation of the crude extract resulted in the isolation of two new julichrome monomers, namely julichrome Q11 and Q12, along with nine known julichrome analogues. This is the first report of julichromes isolated from a marine source. Significant antibacterial activities of these compounds against Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus subtilis, and an array of methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus, S. aureus and S. simulans AKA1 were observed, as reported by Ju et al . in their full paper at 10.1002/cbdv.202000057 .
