- Abstract: For nearly 50 years, cellular blocks were the exclusive concrete masonry units in the Mauritian construction industry. This particular block is used in building construction projects for its tremendous structural strength and durability. Nonetheless, with hindrances of energy crisis and carbon footprint around the globe, stakeholders are shifting towards ecological material to lessen the energy consumption. In this aspect, there is propellant drive for Mauritius to advance into viable sustainable construction material for a healthier prospective future. A solid concrete block embedded with the polystyrene core (the eco-block) with its thermal and acoustic insulation was introduced in the island since early 2015. Nevertheless, the usage of eco-block is still lagging behind in Mauritius owing to lack of product awareness. Following these dilemmas, this paper provides a critical evaluation on the preferences for eco-block adoption as a green construction material in buildings.
