Abstract

Abstract : The Front Cover shows versatility of lignin as a material towards fabrication of carrier systems for active ingredients in nanomedicine, agricultural chemistry, and biocatalysis. In this critical review, Mika H. Sipponen and co‐workers discuss 180 articles on the recent advancements and future opportunities for lignin‐based nano‐ and microscaled carrier systems. The authors particularly assess the state‐of‐the‐art related to regulation and biocompatibility at the biological interface, while also discussing the associated technical challenges. This Review indicates that lignin‐based materials hold exciting opportunities for a broad range of applications. While many of the cited studies have found lignins to be biocompatible, more studies are needed to assess the safety of lignin‐based carrier systems to facilitate establishment of the regulatory landscape for applications concerning environment and human health.
