- Abstract : 'CP 04‐1566' (Reg. No. CV‐152, PI 667622) sugarcane (a complex hybrid of Saccharum spp.) was developed through cooperative research conducted by the USDA‐ARS, the University of Florida, and the Florida Sugar Cane League, Inc., and was released to growers in Florida on 30 Sept. 2011. CP 04‐1566 was selected from the cross X01‐0246 ('CP 89‐2377' × 'CP 96‐1252') made at Canal Point on 29 Nov. 2001. Both parents were released for commercial production: CP 89‐2377 for organic (muck) soils and CP 96‐1252 for both muck and sand soils. CP 04‐1566 was tested in stage 4 on sand soils in Florida because of its superior yields on sand soils in stage 3. CP 04‐1566 was released for sand soils because of its resistance to all the major diseases in Florida: brown rust (caused by Puccinia melanocephala H. & P. Sydow) even though it does not contain the gene for brown rust resistance ( Bru 1), orange rust (caused by P. kuehnii E.J. Butler), Sugarcane mosaic virus strain E (mosaic), smut (caused by Ustilago scitaminea H. & P. Sydow), and ratoon stunt (caused by Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli Evtushenko et al.), and it is resistant to leaf scald (caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson), in Florida. CP 04‐1566 has a cane yield and commercial recoverable sucrose (CRS) equal to those of the commercial check, 'CP 78‐1628'. CP 04‐1566 is susceptible to Sugarcane yellow leaf virus and had moderate to poor tolerance to freezes on the basis of its rank in regard to CRS in 2010–11 andAbstract : 'CP 04‐1566' (Reg.
