- Abstract: Austenite oxide dispersed strengthened (ODS) steel with composition Fe-16.6Cr-10Ni-2.5Mo-0.5Ti-2.5Y2 O3 (alloy 1) and Fe-16.6Cr-10Ni-2.5Mo-0.5Ti-2.5ZrO2 (alloy 2) were synthesized via the mechanical alloying (MA) method. The mechanical alloying was carried out in a Fritsch P7 planetary ball mill with the variation of milling duration from 10 hrs to 40 hrs by keeping the other parameters constant (viz. RPM-300, BPR-10:1, Medium-Argon). The consolidation of ball milled powder was carried out at 900 Mpa and 100 °C using a hot press. Y2 O3 and ZrO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized via the well-known sol-gel process. The NPs and alloys were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopic techniques. XRD results confirmed the formation of NPs and alloys. Microhardness measurements have been carried out on all the annealed samples with the help of a microhardness tester. The value of hardness is found to be high in alloy 2 (4.625 GPa) as compared to alloy 1 (4.382 GPa) and ODS (2.941 GPa). The maximum value of hardness in alloy 2 is attributed to the coherent and uniform dispersion of ZrO2 particles in the austenite steel matrix.
