- Abstract : A review on blast resistance and protection of dams to blast loads are presented. Different attack scenarios for high dams are discussed. Merits and demerits of experimental and numerical methods are analyzed. Blast resistance performance of different dam types is discussed. Discussions and recommendations for further studies are provided. Abstract: High dams with large reservoirs are potential targets for terrorist attacks and local wars, owing to their significant social influence and military value. Blast-resistant security of the cascaded hydroelectric plant is particularly important. If such dams are subjected to accidental or intentional blast loads, this might not only cause considerable damage to the dam but also lead to more serious secondary disasters with associated social impact. Thus, structural engineers and policy regulators must understand the blast-resistant performance of high dams subjected to blast loads. Damage prediction and mitigation measures require comprehensive knowledge of blast loading characteristics (underwater explosion, air blast, and penetration explosion), shock wave-structure interaction, dynamic mechanical properties of materials, failure modes, and damage mechanisms. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of the blast resistance and protection of high dams to blast loads. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of the blast resistance and protection of high dams to blast loads. We review and discuss the different attack scenarios for high dams, shock wave propagation characteristics from explosions in different mediums, dynamic material properties at high strain rate, numerical simulation methods, blast-resistant performance of different dam types, and protective measures. Further, we suggest the direction of future development and key research regarding high dams in the blast-resistant and protective technology field. … (more)
