- Abstract: Fe-B-based metallic glasses are formed in a wide concentration range 12–28 at. % B. Previously, the composition formula [B-B2 Fe8 ]Fe in relevance to BFe2 devitrification phase was obtained with the help of cluster-plus-glue-atom model but this formula only explains the B-rich part of the metallic glasses, ∼25 at.%B. In the present work, the composition formula of B-lean metallic glasses is addressed, considering the involvement of B-lean metastable devitrification phase BFe3 that appears often in Fe-B-based metallic glasses. The Fe-B binary eutectic point Fe83 B17 is explained using a dual-cluster formula [Fe-Fe12 ]B3 + [B-Fe9 ]B1 Fe2 = Fe24 B5 ≈ Fe82.8 B17.2, where the two formulas are derived respectively from FCC Fe eutectic phase and metastable BFe3 phase. The latter formula, containing ∼15.4 at.%B, well explains the B-lean metallic glass compositions. The present formula [B-Fe9 ]B1 Fe2 and the previous one [B-B2 Fe8 ]Fe actually set the lower (i.e., ∼15.4 at. % B) and upper limit of Fe-B-based metallic glasses (i.e. ∼25 at. % B). Graphical abstract: Image 1 Highlights: Fe-rich Fe-B compositions are interpreted via dual cluster formulas using stable BFe2 and metastable BFe3 eutectic phases. Fe-B glass-forming composition range is covered by two cluster formulas [B-B2 Fe8 ]Fe and [B-Fe9 ]BFe2 . Compositions of all Fe-B-based metallic glasses are explained by the two formulas derived from BFe2 and BFe3 phases.
