- Abstract: Understanding the relationships among community structure, vegetation structure and availability of food resources are a key to unravelling the ecological processes that structure biological communities. In this study, we tested (i) whether the composition of small mammal communities changed across gradients in habitat quality in tropical forest fragments, and (ii) whether any observed change could be explained by the functional traits of species. We sampled 24 trapping grids in fragments of semi‐deciduous forest, in each of two 6‐month periods. We considered each trapping grid as a sampling unit, for which we collected three datasets: an environmental matrix (vegetation structure and food resource availability), the abundance of small mammal species (community structure) and a matrix of functional traits (ecological and morphological traits which express tolerance to habitat disturbance and trophic guild). We used an RLQ approach to evaluate the association between traits and environmental gradients. Forest‐specialist and scansorial–arboreal species were associated with more complex habitat that had greater litter and canopy cover and more fallen logs. In relation to trophic guilds, granivore (fruit seeds), insectivorous and omnivorous species were also associated with higher complexity habitat, while frugivores were associated with shrub cover and availability of fruits. Resumo: Entender a relação entre a estrutura da comunidade, estrutura da vegetação e disponibilidade de recursos alimentares é chave para revelar os processos que estruturam as comunidades biológicas. Neste estudo, nós testamos a) se a composição da comunidade de pequenos mamíferos mudou ao longo de um gradiente de qualidade do habitat em fragmentos florestais tropicais, e b) se qualquer mudança observada poderia ser explicada pelos atributos funcionais das espécies. Nós amostramos 24 grides de armadilhas em florestas semidecíduas, sendo cada amostrado em dois períodos separados por 6‐meses. Nós consideramos cada gride de armadilha como uma unidade amostral, onde nós coletamos três conjuntos de dados: uma matriz ambiental (estrutura da vegetação e disponibilidade de recursos alimentares), a abundância das espécies de pequenos mamíferos (estrutura da comunidade) e uma matriz de atributos funcionais (atributos ecológicos e morfológicos que expressam tolerância à habitats perturbados e guildas tróficas). Nós usamos a abordagem RLQ para avaliar a associação entre os atributos e o gradiente ambiental. Espécies especialistas‐florestais e escansoriais‐arborícolas estiveram associadas a habitats mais complexos, que tinham grande cobertura de serapilheira e dossel e mais troncos caídos. Em relação as guildas tróficas, espécies granívoras (predadoras de sementes), insetívoras e onívoras estivaram associadas com cobertura de arbustos e disponibilidade de frutos. Nós concluímos que os atributos funcionais (uso do hábitat, uso do estrato vertical, dieta) promovem valiosos insights na distribuição de pequenos mamíferos ao longo de um gradiente de qualidade de habitat em fragmentos florestais tropicais. Nós destacamos que estudos de comunidades em paisagens fragmentadas devem investigar os diferentes componentes da biodiversidade não apenas na escala de paisagem mas também na escala de habitat. … (more)
