- Abstract: Invited for this month's cover picture is the group of Prof . Dr. Stefano Passerini. The front cover illustrates the use of citric acid (co‐)crosslinked bio‐derived polymers, with chitosan and guar gum, as water‐soluble binders for sustainable lithium‐ion battery cathodes. Abstract : "The aqueous electrode processing of high‐energy positive electrode materials will provide a great leap forward towards sustainable lithium‐ion battery production. The ideal candidates for water‐soluble binders are bio‐derived polymers. Among these, chitosan is the second‐most abundant biopolymer, derived, e.g., from shrimp shell waste and readily applicable as an environmentally benign binding agent. The key for an improved performance is finding the optimum chain length and degree of deacetylation of the polymer as well as potential (co‐)crosslinking strategies with other biomaterials."
