- Highlights: Tool number and enclasping torque unique to WM are used to analyze their effect. The kinematics of WM and the geometric relationship among cutting parameters are established. The effects of the single and combined cutting parameters on the output variables are analyzed. The relationships between parameters and the output variables are modeled with high desirability. By selecting the optimized parameters, a multi-optimization of the output variables is achieved. Abstract: For achieving efficient processing of a large screw, a precise knowledge of surface roughness and cutting force are vital in whirlwind milling (WM). Distinguishing from the traditional turning and milling, the feeding speed in WM is depended on the other cutting parameters, such as cutting speed and cutting depth, and its geometric relationship is established for further study. In the present work, one of the main contribution is to model the relationship between cutting parameters and the output variables (surface roughness, cutting force) through the response surface methodology (RSM). Then, the effects of the single and combined cutting parameter are analyzed in detail. The other contribution is to achieve the multi-optimization of surface roughness and cutting force with high desirability. By selecting the optimized cutting parameters, the minimization of tangential cutting force and surface roughness can be acquired separately as 100 N and Ra 0.17 μm.
