Abstract

Abstract : Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the prostate is a rare but distinctive variant of prostatic adenocarcinoma. A review of 725 cases of carcinoma of the prostate yielded only the single case reported in this paper. The tumor is histologically identical to adenoid cystic carcinoma of salivary gland and breast. Whereas the myoepithelial cell is probably the cell of origin of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast, the presence of the myoepithelial cell in human prostate has not been established. Transurethral resection of the tumor has resulted in a three-year asymptomatic period for the patient. Further studies are needed to establish the cell of origin and clinical behavior of this morphologically distinctive prostatic adenocarcinoma.
