Abstract

Summary: Gastric decontamination with orally administered activated charcoal is a common treatment for many poisonings. However drug ingestion may result in loss of protective airway reflexes and aspiration of activated charcoal in these patients presents an important complication. Although activated charcoal is thought to be an inert substance it may cause damage to the respiratory tract if aspirated. We report a case of acute respiratory failure and pulmonary damage that resulted in tracheal stenosis following accidental aspiration of activated charcoal.
