Abstract

Summary: A 55‐year‐old female scheduled for elective knee arthroscopy became significantly dyspnoeic in the anaesthetic room prior to peripheral venous cannulation. The subsequent clinical course and later investigations led to a diagnosis of takotsubo cardiomyopathy precipitated by needle phobia‐induced anxiety. This example highlights a rare but significant manifestation of needle phobia and prompts a discussion about the optimal techniques available to ameliorate the response in the peri‐operative period.
