Abstract

Abstract: Volcanoes are a potential hazard to over 750 million people worldwide. Accessing them to install monitoring equipment can be logistically challenging and dangerous. Traditional monitoring equipment is expensive and not available to many local communities. A new, low‐cost method is proposed to address these challenges using a unique 3D thermal photogrammetric modelling workflow. The data acquisition and processing part of this workflow has been tested on Stromboli, a volcano in the Aeolian Islands of Italy. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were deployed at the volcano to acquire both visible and thermal infrared imagery. Both datasets were then digitally processed to produce 3D virtual outcrop models. Finally, the two datasets and models were integrated to produce the first 3D thermal photogrammetric model of an active volcano. The result is an easy‐to‐use workflow applicable to any volcano. This low‐cost monitoring system could be deployed in developing countries and remote areas otherwise hindered by limited budgets and poor access. Résumé: Les volcans représentent un danger potentiel pour plus de 750 millions de personnes à travers le monde. L'accès pour y installer des équipements de surveillance peut être délicat et dangereux sur le plan logistique. Les équipements de surveillance traditionnels sont coûteux et difficilement accessibles pour de nombreuses communautés locales. Une nouvelle méthode peu coûteuse est proposée pour relever ces défis en utilisant une procédure unique de modélisation photogrammétrique thermique 3D. La phase d'acquisition et de traitement de données de cette procédure a été testée sur le Stromboli, un volcan des îles éoliennes, en Italie. Des drones (UAV) ont été déployés sur le volcan pour acquérir des images, tant dans le visible que dans l'infrarouge thermique. Les deux jeux de données ont ensuite été traités numériquement pour produire des modèles d'affleurement virtuels 3D. Enfin, les deux jeux de données et les modèles ont été intégrés pour produire le premier modèle photogrammétrique thermique 3D d'un volcan actif. Le résultat est une procédure d'usage facile et applicable à n'importe quel volcan. Ce système de surveillance à bas coût pourrait être déployé dans les pays en développement et les régions éloignées, pénalisés par des budgets limités et des difficultés d'accès. Zusammenfassung: Vulkane sind für über 750 Millionen Menschen weltweit eine potentielle Bedrohung. Sie mit Überwachungsgeräten zu bestücken, kann logistisch herausfordernd und gefährlich sein. Zudem sind traditionelle Überwachungsgeräte teuer und für viele lokale Kommunen nicht verfügbar. Mit einer hier vorgeschlagenen, kostengünstigen Methode auf der Basis einer photogrammetrischen 3D Modellierung mit Thermalaufnahmen soll dem begegnet werden. Die Datenerfassung und die Prozessierung des Arbeitsablaufes wurde am Beispiel des Stromboli, einem Vulkan der Aeolischen Inseln in Italien, getestet. Unbemannte Luftfahrzeuge (UAVs) wurden am Vulkan eingesetzt und die Modellierung mit RGB‐ und Thermalaufnahmen durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse wurden verknüpft und ein erstes 3D Modell eines aktiven Vulkans erstellt. Der vorschlagene Ablauf lässt sich auf andere Vulkane übertragen. Hiermit kann ein kostengünstiges Überwachungsmittel für Entwicklungsländer oder abgelegene Gebiete bereitgestellt werden kann, was sonst an den Gerätekosten oder am Zugang scheitern würde. Resumen: Los volcanes son un peligro potencial para más de 750 millones de personas en todo el mundo. Acceder a ellos para instalar equipos de monitoreo puede ser peligroso y un desafío logístico. El equipo de monitoreo tradicional es costoso y no está al alcance de muchas comunidades locales. Se propone un nuevo método de bajo coste para abordar estos retos utilizando un flujo de trabajo basado en modelos fotogramétricos 3D térmicos. La parte de adquisición y proceso de datos de este flujo de trabajo se ha probado en Stromboli, un volcán en las Islas Eolias de Italia. Se desplegaron vehículos aéreos no tripulados (UAV) en el volcán para adquirir imágenes tanto infrarrojas térmicas como de luz visible. Ambos conjuntos de datos fueron procesados digitalmente para producir modelos 3D de los afloramientos. Finalmente, los dos conjuntos de datos y modelos se integraron para producir el primer modelo fotogramétrico térmico 3D de un volcán activo. El resultado es un flujo de trabajo fácil de usar y aplicable a cualquier volcán.
