Abstract

Abstract: Conscious sedation is increasingly used to enable patients to tolerate uncomfortable or painful surgical procedures, avoiding the use of a general anaesthetic. Historically, inappropriately administered or monitored sedation was associated with a high morbidity and mortality. National guidance now exists which sets standards for safe sedation for healthcare procedures. This article uses this publication as a framework to discuss the generic principles and practice of sedation and should not be seen as a substitute for more formal training.
