- Abstract: The effect of ultrasonic impact peening (UIP) on corrosion resistance of AZ31 magnesium alloy was studied. The UIP treatment was performed using pressure force of 85 N and operational frequency of 20 kHz. The state of the surface after application of the UIP was studied by stereomicroscope and electrochemical microscope using non-contact surface profiling. The corrosion resistance was evaluated by measurements of electrochemical characteristics using potentiodynamic polarization (PD) tests for ground and UIP treated samples in 0.1M NaCl. The obtained data were interpreted in a form of potentiodynamic polarization curves. Tafel extrapolation method was used for the analysis of the PD curves. Based on the result, the application of the UIP treatment on the AZ31 surface led to the deterioration of the corrosion resistance in chosen solution.
