- Abstract: A cleaner method for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural production was proposed, using corn stalk as the raw material. Corn stalk conversion was accelerated by magnesium and tin ion-loaded biochar catalysis in a multi-functional solvent. An ionic liquid-organic solvent containing 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and isopropanol was found to be capable of corn stalk conversion to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Based on this biphasic system, the modified biochar was used to improve 5-hydroxymethylfurfural production. The distributed magnesium and tin ions degraded and further converted the corn stalk. The maximum 5-hydroxymethylfurfural yield of 63.57% was obtained at a corn stalk concentration of 20%. Graphical abstract: Image 1 Highlights: Isopropanol/AMIMCl solvent was efficient for corn stalk conversion into 5-HMF. Corn stalk conversion was accelerated by Biochar-Mg-Sn contact with solvent. Maximal 5-HMF yield of 63.57% was obtained in this reaction system.
