Abstract

Abstract: A survey was carried out to gather information and documenting the goat farming system in districts of Northern Areas of Pakistan. The objective of survey was to observe the constraints of farmer and document their problems. Survey was for seven goat breed of Northern Areas of Pakistan (Kel, Baltistani, Koh-e-Khizer, Kaghani, and Gaddi). Seventy farmers were visited out of them 57% farmers did never vaccine against any disease and 29% did vaccine on regular basis. Farmer those were doing vaccine on regular or occasionally basis did for FMD (67%), Enterotoxaemia (100 %) and CCPP 67%). For parasitic control 57% farmer did nothing while 29% farmer gave medicine to their herds occasionally and 14% farmers on regular basis. For ectoparasites and endoparasites farmers never used medication. About 14% farmers were using on traditional treatment while 29% farmers got treatment for their goats from veterinary doctors on regular basis. Diseases outbreak in those farmers herds were FMD (14.0%) while no disease outbreak for CCPP, goat pox and Enterotoxaemia. Main production systems for goats were agro forestry (14%) and agro-pastoralist (43%). About 57% of the farmers continuously unconfined animals. Only 29 % farmers had sheds for their herds while 29% adopted open housing system. Only 28.6% farmers had grown pasture for feeding while 43% farmer offered concentrates to their animals and 29% farmers offered mineral mixture to their herds. About 57% of the famers adopted cross breeding while main mattings were carried during month of September. Moreover ram selection was adopted by 14% of the subjects. Approximately 42.9% of the farmers marketed their goat in the local market while 28.6% sold their goat directly without the involvement of middleman. The current study highlights potential areas of improvement in goat production for better welfare of animals as well as goat breeders.
