- Abstract: The objectives were to determine the energy values of feed ingredients and to develop prediction equations for estimating DE and ME of feeds for conventional pigs using data from mini pigs. Twelve crossbred conventional pigs (52.3 ± 2.8 kg of BW; Landrace x Yorkshire) and 12 mini pigs (30.9 ± 3.3 kg of BW; Jeju Island native pig) were individually housed in metabolic crates and allotted to a replicated 6 x 5 incomplete Latin square design with 6 diets and 5 periods, respectively. A basal diet containing mainly corn and soybean meal (SBM) was prepared. Five additional diets were formulated to contain 25% of SBM, corn gluten feed (CGF), copra meal (CM), palm kernel expellers (PKE), or sesame expellers (SEP). All diets contained the same proportion of corn to soybean meal at 4.11:1. The DE of SBM, CGF, CM, PKE, and SEP for conventional pigs were 3, 871, 2, 562, 2, 918, 3, 015, and 3, 102 kcal/kg as-fed, and those for mini pigs were 3, 951, 2, 518, 2, 954, 2, 807, and 3, 369 kcal/kg as-fed. The ME of SBM, CGF, CM, PKE, and SEP for conventional pigs were 3, 696, 2, 421, 2, 795, 2, 895, and 2, 800, and those for mini pigs were 3, 645, 2, 388, 2, 752, 2, 698 and 3, 089 kcal/kg as-fed. The conventional and mini pigs showed high correlation for both energy digestibility (rP < 0.001; and ME = (0.928 x ME in mini pigs) + 218.42 with rP < 0.001. In conclusion, mini pigs can be used for estimating energy utilization in feedstuffs for conventional pigs.
