- Abstract: The objective of this study is to determine the crude protein requirement of broiler chickens placed on straight/singlet diet. This was investigated using two hundred and forty (240) one week day old Agrited ® broiler chickens and allotted into four (4) dietary treatments. Each treatment had 6 replicates with 10 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design (CRD). Four diets designated as T1, T2, T3 and T4 respectively containing different crude protein levels of 22.50%, 22.00%, 21.50% and 21.00% with 2900.46, 2901.06, 2900.46 and 2901.06kcal/kg metabolizable energy levels respectively were formulated. The experiment lasted for 48days. Growth performance results showed significant (P1 had the least feed conversion ratio (2.90) among others (3.21, 3.30 and 3.10 for T2, T3 and T4 respectively). Cut parts showed no significant (P>0.05) differences except dressed weight. Organs weight showed no significant (P>0.05) differences. Serum chemistry values were within normal range established for broiler chickens except for creatinine and urea. Haeematological indices falls within the normal range established for broiler chickens except for MCH and WBC. The feed cost analysis showed that T1 had the least cost/kg weight gain (359.95 Naira) among others (400.83 Naira, 408.91 Naira, 1391.39 Naira for T2, T3 and T4 respectively). Also T1 had the highest gross margin (1410.64 Naira) among other (1070.52 Naira, 1172.82 Naira, 1782.75 Naira for T2, T3 and T4 respectively).Abstract: The objective of this study is to determine the crude protein requirement of broiler chickens placed on straight/singlet diet. In conclusion, broiler chickens placed on T1 (22.5%CP) performed better than others with the least feed conversion ratio, comparable prime cuts, organs weight, serum chemistry, normal haematological parameters, least cost/kg weight gain and highest gross margin. Its use will enhance a high quality animal protein production for broiler chicken placed on straight/single diet. This will lead to an increase in animal protein intake globally. It is therefore recommended. … (more)
