Abstract

Abstract: Skeletal muscle stem and progenitor cells, commonly referred to as satellite cells, are required for postnatal muscle repair and regeneration and play a critical role during fiber hypertrophy. Located beneath the basal lamina of the muscle fiber, these cells often reside in a quiescent state (G0). In response to environmental cues and niche-driven signals, satellite cells are activated, prompting exit of G0 and re-entry to the cell cycle. Progeny may adopt divergent fates: either that of a stem-like state to maintain the population or a commitment to the myogenic lineage. The latter scenario results in fusion of satellite cells to the adjacent myofiber, of which the nuclei are crucial to meeting the increased transcriptional and translational demands experienced during growth. Though an extensive body of literature details the myogenic decisions and bioactivity of mouse satellite cells, less is understood with regards to regulation of livestock satellite cells during muscle growth. This talk provides a current perspective on livestock muscle growth and satellite cell activities in response to intrinsic and extrinsic factors.
