- Abstract: Introduction: Long working hours are with poorer health and safety outcomes in middle-aged and older Australians, and this relationship can be mediated by shorter sleep, especially for obesity. However the relationships, particularly with cardiometabolic risk (CMR) are not well understood in younger workers. Methods: Data from the 22 year follow-up of the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study in Perth, Western Australia were used to determine the relationship between working hours, sleep and cardiometabolic risk factors (CMR). N=873 young adults provided details about working hours per week. CMR factors, including waist circumference, glucose, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, were determined from fasting blood samples and also facilitated calculation of a continuous clinical index of cardiometabolic risk (cCICR). Self-reported sleep duration was provided in addition to highest educational attainment, routine time demands (work versus work and study), smoking habits, and shift work status. Results: CMR factors including increased waist circumference ( F 5, 698 = 6.66, p <0.001), higher fasting plasma glucose ( F 5, 647 = 3.89, p =0.002), and reduced HDL-cholesterol ( F 5, 647 = 5.63, p <0.001), were associated with >38h working weeks when adjusted for education, shift work status, time demands, and smoking. Given the longer-term relationships seen between working hours and poor cardiometabolic health, there is a need for early education and awareness of the impact of working hours. Longitudinal studies to determine the impact of working hours, sleep and sociodemographic characteristics from early working years are required to better understand the contribution to poor cardiometabolic health.
