- Abstract: Introduction: Obesity is a multifactorial health condition prevalent in 42% of midlife women (i.e., 40–64 years old). Although women in midlife experience biological changes due to menopause, developmental factors do not sufficiently account for obesity rates. Women in midlife are at risk for depressive symptoms and sleep problems, two significant risk factors for obesity. These modifiable lifestyle factors show promise as mechanisms to prevent weight gain. However, little is known about the complex daily interplay of sleep and emotion in predicting weight. The current study examined how daily sleep duration and negative emotionality are associated with weight outcomes in midlife women. Methods: An archival analysis was performed using data from the Midlife in the United States II study (MIDUS II), Projects 1 and 2. The sample consisted of 489 women (40–64; M =52.7, SD =7.2). Ecological momentary assessments (EMA) of daily sleep duration (mean, variability) and daily negative affect (mean, variability) were utilized, along with an objective assessment of obesity (i.e., BMI). Binary logistic regression assessed study aims. Results: Controlling for selected covariates, average sleep duration ( p =.590; b= -.057; .95% CI=.767, 1.163) and negative affect variability ( p =.092; b=1.175; .95% CI=.825, 12.70) were not significantly associated with BMI. Conclusion: Sleep duration variability and average negative affect predicted higher likelihood of obesity. As such, daily experiences of negative emotion and fluctuations in sleep duration have implications for weight outcomes in midlife women. Although previous work has utilized cross-sectional, retrospective self-report, and/or laboratory-based methodology, this study highlights the importance of understanding daily variability in health behaviors and psychosocial factors.
