- Abstract: Introduction: The Stroop test (Stroop, 1935) is a measure of executive function and part of neurocognitive evaluations. The Stroop test measures reaction times (RT) for the time difference between naming the font color of a printed word when word meaning and font color are the same (congruent), and naming the font color of a printed word when word meaning and font color are not the same (incongruent). In our Reverse Stroop, subjects click on a box color of the named color, and a second part where subjects click on a box in the color named while the name is in a different color; there are five colors used. Interference is then the difference between congruent and the incongruent parts of the test. Methods: Subjects were recruited from a sleep center population. After consent, each watched an explanatory video and did practice trials. The test was initiated only after the examiner was convinced that the subject understood the task. The computer then presented 50 trials, the first 25 congruent and the second 25 incongruent. Results: Of 25 recruits, 23 (91% male 26–79 years) completed the test. There was a difference between Mean congruent (MC) and Mean incongruent stimuli (MI) (p<.001), indicating a time for executive decision. Some subjects showed a learning curve with each part, but not in interference. There was a correlation between RT and age for both MC (0.49 p<.001) and MI (0.44 p<.05). Conclusion: This pilot study shows that our Reverse Stroop test shows robust interference in a decision-making pathway, independent of RT, like that measured by the PVT.
