- Abstract: Introduction: Breakfast intake is associated with many positive health outcomes, including lower risk of obesity. Furthermore, inadequate and poorly timed sleep has been identified as a potential risk factor for both obesity and less healthy dietary intake. Because breakfast is considered a marker of health, and sleep has been shown to influence dietary choices, it is necessary to further investigate how sleep influences breakfast intake. The current study examined daily sleep duration and daily sleep timing as predictors of breakfast intake in adults. Methods: An archival analysis was performed using the Pittsburgh Cold Study 3. The sample consisted of 184 participants (ages 18–55; M =30.175, SD =10.856; 58% males). Ecological momentary assessments (EMA) of daily sleep duration (mean), daily sleep timing (mean), and daily self-reported breakfast intake were utilized over 14 days. Results: Hierarchical regression was used to examine the association between sleep timing, sleep duration, and breakfast intake. Age, sex, and wake-time were entered into the model as covariates. The overall model significantly predicted breakfast intake, F (5, 179) =5.534, p <.001, R 2 =.134. Although sleep duration was not a significant individual predictor of breakfast intake (β =-.109, t (179) =-1.292, p =.198), sleep timing did significantly predict breakfast intake (β =-.313, t (179) =-3.048, p =.003). Interestingly, the start time rather than the length of the sleep period was predictive of breakfast intake. As sleep timing is a modifiable lifestyle factor, it may be of particular importance to explore in relation to dietary habits. This study highlights the importance of understanding the role of sleep in dietary habits. Findings can inform prevention and intervention approaches which target healthy diet and weight management.
