- Abstract: Limited evidence supports success from extra supplemental nutrients for mediation of reduced growth during immune challenges. Extra-renal roles of vitamin D in immune function implicates vitamin D for potential benefits. The objective was to assess growth and bone ash responses to vitamin D3 (D) under control or immune challenges. At weaning, 216 crossbred pigs (4/pen, 6 pens/treatment) were randomly allotted within sex and weight blocks to 1 of 9 treatments. Treatments included 3 D supplements (0, 100, or 800 IU/kg) in a factorial arrangement with 3 vaccine (V) protocols; no injection (0xV), 2 mL Lawsonia vaccine at days 0 and 7 (2xV), or single vaccine at day 14 (1xV)). An adjustment diet with no supplemental D was fed for 1 wk, then assigned D diets for 2 wk (P2). After P2 all pigs were phase-fed standard diets (D=280 IU/kg) to assess subsequent growth to 120 kg. No differences due to D or V were detected in ADG (0.233 ± 0.021 kg/d) or ADFI (0.362 ± 0.027 kg/d) over the 21-d nursery trial, but GF was reduced ( P < 0.03) in pigs fed D800 vs. D100 (0.612 vs. 0.659 + 0.028). Bone mineral content (BMC, g) from DXA scans at 7 wk (n=4 pigs/treatment) revealed reduced BMC of pigs fed D0 vs. D100, D800 (287 vs. 325, 323 g/pig). Growth from nursery to 120 kg was reduced ( P <0.01) in pigs fed D0 vs. D100 and D800 (0.828 vs. 0.876, 0.889 + 0.021 kg/d). Reduced growth due to D0 tended (P<0.10) to be greater in 1xV and 2xV than 0xV groups.
