- Abstract: Introduction: Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) has been well characterized in patients with heart failure (HF). There are 870, 000 new HF cases annually and projections show a 46% increase from 2012 to 2030, with fewer than 3000 donor organs available worldwide per year. This shortage has forced providers to implant left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) such the Heartmate II as destination therapy for decompensating HF patients. Case studies report changes in HF patient's SDB, including improvement or resolution of sleep apnea. Our aim was to better characterize SDB in this population using polysomnography (PSG) results after device implant. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed to describe PSG features of patients who received LVAD for HF between January 2010 and September 2017. PSGs performed within 2 years after LVAD placement were reviewed. PSG parameters in these patients are described. Results: Eight subjects were identified for whom PSGs were performed within two years post LVAD. Mean age at the time of LVAD placement was 61.4 ± 5.8 years. 62.5% of the subjects were male. Mean BMI was 32.4 ± 6.9 kg/m2. Mean number of days between LVAD and PSG were 356 ± 177 (range 163–643 days). Mean AHI and RDI were 17.36 ± 19.39 per hour and 21.16 ± 20.01 per hour respectively. Most events were obstructive, with obstructive apnea and hypopnea index of 19.94 ± 20.50 and central apnea index 0.99 ± 1.46 per hour.
